Learning Dyslexia
Dyslexia is characterized by inaccurate word recognition and poor spelling, fluency, and decoding. Difficulties stem from a deficit in the phonological component of language which can impact reading comprehension and vocabulary. Being that it’s the most common cause of reading, writing, and spelling problems in school, early and effective intervention is critical.
When a student is struggling with reading or any particular subject, for that matter, the first thought is to seek out tutoring services. The reality is that traditional, content-based tutoring is not designed to help your child learn how to read or write. What’s needed is a remedial-based approach that develops foundational skills and closes learning gaps. The best type of remedial program is one that engages the auditory, visual, kinaesthetic, and tactile pathways. A multi-sensory method for early literacy development will be the most successful in bringing your child up to grade level.

Reading Intervention Programs for Kids with Dyslexia
Strategic Learning Clinic offers two remedial reading programs, one in English and one in French. The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program® (LiPS) is a multisensory program for students who have difficulty with English decoding and spelling and who have underdeveloped phonological awareness and reading skills. The LiPS Program is unique in that it helps students explore phonemes through the oral-motor movements that produce the sounds. This approach allows students to hear, see, and feel the physical characteristics of phonemes, and the contrasts between them. Enseignement multisensoriel simultané (EMS) is a multi-sensory reading program in French, which simultaneously uses visual, auditory, tactile, and kinaesthetic pathways to teach accurate decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension skills. This program is based on the renowned multi-sensory Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading and spelling.
Multi-sensory teaching also provides students with a key component: repetition. In using a structured approach, these programs can be implemented intensively and one-on-one to ensure best results. They focus on building phonological awareness skills by focusing on rhyming, simple and complex syllables, and sound groupings.
