Enseignement Multisensoriel Simultané
For students with dyslexia, a special approach to reading is needed. Enseignement Multisensoriel Simultané® (EMS), a multisensory French remedial reading and spelling program based on the renowned Orton-Gillingham method, is designed for students of all ages who need to learn the structure of language and definitively master the association between symbols and sounds. This is important to learn first before one can learn the rules that govern written language.
Put simply, the EMS® program teaches students how to read, write, and spell. Material is presented in short, sequential steps to ensure that the student becomes more independent and confident. Each student moves at their own pace.
EMS® differs from other methods because it incorporates phonological awareness and phonemic principles. It aims to teach: visual and auditory discrimination skills, words without images, and the etymology of French words. There are many advantages to the program including the fact that it can be taught to students of all ages and levels. When implemented early, it can prevent failure and reduce the need for recovery.
This program is particularly aimed at English-speaking students who, after struggling with learning French as a second language, are still unable to master the language. This program is also useful to those for whom the process of learning has been negative.
EMS® uses all of the senses and has been known to be a successful intervention for students with dyslexia. The program uses step-by-step lesson plans with various levels. At Strategic Learning Clinic, we review student progress at regular intervals to ensure mastery of concepts.
