Study Skills Course Overview
How many of you ask your child what they have for homework when they come home from school and they respond, “I don’t have any” or “I finished it in class” only to find out that there’s a test the next day and they haven’t yet studied? How many of you fight with your child each night to get their work done in time? The frustration is real.
Eventually, you may feel like you want to give up and begin to show disinterest with respect to your child getting a passing grade on the next exam. On the other hand, you may be trapped into thinking, like many parents, that you are solely responsible for your child’s choices and success. We have good news! The parent-child power struggle and battle over homework is finally over.
Strategic Learning Clinic’s celebrated study skills course is effective because we equip students with the necessary tools to be successful on test day. What’s more, the strategies introduced are easily transferable to the classroom environment.
As study skills are not explicitly taught in school, many students struggle to master the ability to prepare well for quizzes, tests, and exams. Many students struggle on tests not only because they have not achieved mastery in the content evaluated, but because they struggle with:
- knowing what they will be tested on
- organizing all of their class materials
- planning and adhering to a study schedule
- deciding on the optimal length of study sessions
- preparing for different types of test questions
- ensuring that they have a study space free of distractions
- learning from their mistakes on previous tests
During the Clinic’s study skills course, students learn:
- how to become an independent, active learner in the classroom
- how to take notes, extracting key information from teachers and texts in a systematic way
- how to manage and organize their time, material, and information
- techniques for learning and memorizing different kinds of material
- how to prepare for tests, reduce test anxiety, and ensure test success
- the critical roles that sleep, nutrition, and exercise play in a student’s academic success
At the beginning of the course, the student’s needs are identified and a proper plan is created. Throughout the course, the student’s success is monitored and the plan is adjusted if necessary.
